Workflow runs

Each time a workflow runs, OpsLevel records the run: its status, each step's output, and its logs. Runs appear on the workflow's Runs tab.

Start a run

You can always start a workflow manually, even if it has a trigger:

  1. Open the workflow.
  2. Start a run.
  3. Enter values for the workflow's kickoff inputs, then confirm.

Runs also start automatically from a workflow's trigger, if it has one.

The Runs tab

The Runs tab lists the workflow's runs, newest first, with:

ColumnWhat it shows
StatusThe run's current status (see below)
StartedWhen the run started
Started byThe person who started it. Runs started by a schedule or webhook show the workflow's configured user.
DurationHow long the run took, or has been running

The header shows the share of finished runs that succeeded. Runs are shown 10 per page.

Run statuses

StatusMeaning
UnstartedThe run is created but hasn't begun.
In progressThe run is executing, waiting at an approval step, or paused at a wait step.
SuccessEvery step finished successfully.
FailureA step failed, and the run stopped.
CancelledSomeone cancelled the run.

Run details

Select a run to open it. The run's steps appear in order, each with:

  • Status, including whether it was retried
  • Output, which later steps can use at steps.<step id>.output
  • Logs, for following what happened or debugging a failure

For Automation steps, the details link to the Automation run, where you can see the changes it made and any pull requests it opened.

Approve or reject

When a run reaches an approval step, it waits as In progress until someone responds. Open the run, review what came before, then approve to continue or reject to stop the run.

When a run fails

A failed step stops the run, and the run's status changes to Failure. Open the failed step's output and logs to see why. Common causes:

  • An HTTP request returned an error, for example because of an expired API key
  • An Automation couldn't complete its task with the information it had
  • A kickoff input was missing or in the wrong format

Some steps retry automatically before failing. The step shows how many attempts it took.

Cancel a run

To stop a run that's in progress, open it and cancel it. Steps that already finished aren't undone. For example, pull requests that were already opened stay open.
