Workflows, Automations, and the Agent Registry let you run AI agents across your engineering org as a shared, repeatable way of working. Agents draw on the context you already keep in OpsLevel, and people stay involved wherever your standards call for it.
How the pieces fit together
| Concept | What it is |
|---|---|
| Workflow | A defined process for a kind of work, made of steps. Starts manually, or from a trigger. |
| Step | One part of a workflow: an Automation, an HTTP request, an approval, or a wait. |
| Automation | A repeatable task done by an AI agent, set up with the agent, model, and context it needs. Runs on its own or as a workflow step. |
| Agent | An AI agent that does the work: one of OpsLevel's built-in agents, or one from an integration like Anthropic. |
| Run | One execution of a workflow or Automation, with its status, steps, and logs recorded. |
A workflow coordinates the work. Automations do the AI parts of it, using the agents in your Agent Registry.
Example: a bug fix, from ticket to pull request
- A ticket is labeled for an agent, which starts the workflow through a webhook trigger.
- An Automation reviews the ticket and decides whether it has enough information to act on.
- If it doesn't, the workflow comments on the ticket asking for details, and stops.
- If it does, a second Automation generates the code change and opens a pull request.
- An approval step waits for an engineer to review the change.
- The workflow updates the ticket with the result.
What you'll need
- Catalog: the services your workflows will touch, with owners. Agents use the catalog for context about your services.
- Git integration: for workflows and Automations that change code.
- Other integrations as needed: for example, your ticketing system or Slack, if your workflows start from tickets or post updates.
